Since 01/2008 I am at NYU.

Research
interests:

I am interested in the way visual information is used for the control of behaviour. Specifically, I am studying smooth pursuit eye movements, and the ability to estimate the direction and velocity of moving objects under different conditions. So far, I have shown that motion perception and pursuit velocity are impaired by low stimulus contrast to the same extent (Spering et al., 2005, JOV). When a horizontal target has to be tracked in the presence of a to-be-ignored distractor, the eye curves away from that distractor stimulus (Spering, Gegenfurtner, & Kerzel, 2006, JEP: HPP). Most recently, I have been looking at the effect of relative motion signals on smooth pursuit (Spering & Gegenfurtner, 2007a, J Neurophys) and on motion perception (Spering & Gegenfurtner, 2007b, J Neurophys). I am also collaborating with Prof. Guillaume Masson and Dr. Anna Montagnini from CNRS Marseille in a project on 2D motion integration for pursuit initiation (Montagnini, Spering, & Masson, 2006, J Neurophys), and on the role of color and luminance for target selection in smooth pursuit and saccadic eye movements (Spering, Montagnini, & Gegenfurtner, subm.).
New:
I received the Klaus-Tschira Preis für verständliche Wissenschaft 2007 for explaining the results of my doctoral thesis to the general public (see November issue of Bild der Wissenschaft).
