Research interests

I am interested in the general question of how we use eye, head and hand movements in everyday life. As this is where we usually use our brains, then addressing questions such as "How do we use vision in unrestrained activities" will help answer questions about the mechanisms that contribute to brain processing in general. My research within "active vision" assumes that we often use eye movements in a task specific fashion to obtain visual information for our current goals. Theoretically, my work addresses aspects of spatial orientation, cognition, visuomotor coordination and perception. I am also interested in the mechanisms that contribute to the perception of motion and colour. The real world is full of colour and motion, and I believe that these cues contribute much more to our percepts than we currently know. If you believe that saccadic eye movements reflect specific strategies that have evolved over time, then you might accept (as I do) that such strategies can be investigated through the observation of behaviour when faced with different goals and that some strategies can perhaps be modeled in various ways - using game theory and reinforcement learning paradigms for example.
