The research group of Peter Janssen investigates the neural representation of three-dimensional shape from disparity in the dorsal and ventral visual stream of the macaque monkey, and how this representation subserves behaviour. The main research tools are single-cell recordings, microstimulation, reversible inactivation and monkey fMRI. The tasks we use include passive fixation, categorization of disparity-defined 3D shape, visually-guided and memory-guided grasping of objects, and eye movements towards objects. Specific research projects focus on the effect of microstimulation in inferior temporal and parietal cortex on 3D shape categorization, the representation of 2D shape in area AIP, functional interactions between the parietal and the premotor cortex during object grasping.
