"Perception of material properties GE 879/9"

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in how we estimate and represent the material properties of substances and objects in our surroundings. In everyday life we effortlessly distinguish between a huge range of different materials, which aids us in object recognition, motor planning and execution, and even such mundane tasks as choosing curtains. Despite the importance of material perception to daily life, relatively little is known about how it works. How do we recognise snow, wood or wax? What cues do our senses provide for distinguishing between different materials? This workshop brings together experts in material appearance from psychology, neuroscience and computer science in an attempt to understand what gives materials their distinctive 'look and feel' and how the brain represents them.
